I wanted to share a little bit about Loofco – the company who supply the sponge, scourer and dishwashing alternatives that I sell.
LoofCo products are inspired by cleaning methods that have been tried and tested over generations. Using this knowledge, they are skilfully created in Sri Lanka and Egypt where all farmers and production workers are treated fairly with wages and benefits.
LoofCo products are made with sustainable plant fibres of loofah plant and coconut.
Coconut coir is the naturally bacteria resistant, fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer brown coconut husk. LoofCo uses coir fibre that is a by-product of coconut food and oil production and might otherwise be burnt. They twist coconut coir fibre around a 100% recyclable, galvanised rust-proof metal core and add a metal hanging loop for easy use and draining. Coconut coir fibres remains stiff when wet, whilst also holding liquid, giving excellent non-scratch scrubbing power.
The loofah plant is a vigorously growing vine from the cucumber family that is rich in durable fibres yet soft and flexible. When ripe, the inside of the loofah fruit develops a network of fibres that are perfect for cleaning and exfoliating purposes when dried. The loofahs are harvested, peeled, deseeded, then dried, cut into lengths and processed by hand in Egypt. This natural tradition that has been passed down through the generations.
Loofco’s mission is to offer an alternative to mass-produced plastic washing-up brushes, pads, scourers and shower puffs that will not biodegrade. Their farming practices are sustainable and to the highest environmental standards. Coconut and Loofah are both renewable raw materials that absorb CO2 when growing. Furthermore, they use coconut fibres and husks that are left over from coconut food and oil production which would otherwise be wasted or burnt.
LoofCo products are vegan, plastic-free, biodegradable, recyclable and offer an effective alternative to plastic scourers, brushes, exfoliators and sponges. All elements of LoofCo products are 100% compostable and biodegradable, except the metal core of the brushes which is recyclable. The cardboard packaging is recyclable.
