Yearly Archives: 2019

My 2019 Eco Journey Reflection Where to start? 2019 has been a year of many many changes on our eco journey. It has come with highs and lows, positives and negatives. The biggest change I’ve made is to cleaning products we use in the house. I had already started making vinegar solution to clean but I have now swapped to refills for stain remover, washing up liquid and toilet cleaner. Also invested in a silicone toilet brush (can recommend!) instead of flushable pads and eco dishwasher tablets from Wilko. I’ve changed one thing at a time so it has been very easy and cost effective and they are all changes that I am happy with. We moved house in November so I’ve also been able to sign up to a fruit & veg delivery scheme again which makes a phenomenal difference to plastic waste. We order each week and it…

It is nearly impossible to ignore the environmental issues we are facing. If you didn’t see the heart-breaking episode of Blue Planet II, where a female pilot whale was reluctant to let go of her dead calf – a death David Attenborough attributed to plastic pollution –  you will certainly have heard of it. It prompted national outrage and people called for a plastic revolution. The series also brought attention to the bleaching of the coral reefs and albatrosses feeding their chicks plastic, among other issues. Obviously, these were issues that existed before the show aired, but Attenborough lending his name to the cause has certainly caught the public imagination. This has led to people being aware that they could possibly be doing more but aren’t really sure what. The task of overhauling a lifestyle can be overwhelming, especially when faced with so much conflicting information. It can be hard…

DECEMBER CHALLENGE REFLECTION – LOOKING BACK ON HOW FAR WE HAVE COME IN THE LAST YEAR. I thought it would be really nice to spend the next few weeks looking back on our own journeys this year and sharing stories on what we have enjoyed, found difficult, achieved and are working towards still. Anything that was particularly easy? Anything that was really hard? If you’d like to comment below with your story that would be great. If you’d like to do a longer post that is a bit more in depth and include some pictures – even better – just get in touch. I look forward to hearing more stories and I will share my own with you.…

What is Green Friday? I may be a bit behind the times, but this is the first I have heard of Green Friday. So guess what…. I did some research! As with “Black Friday”, the Americans have started an all new “thing” – Green Friday. Where companies are trying to coax the public out of the shops and away from their computer and mobile screens (where they are spending so much money!!), to instead spend time outdoors, with friends and family, enjoying the wonders that our world has to offer. Some National Parks in the States have offered free entry to encourage this and there are many similar schemes taking place. There are over 300 big clothes brands encouraging their customers to not “shop til they drop” this Black Friday as it encourages over production and pointless purchases which the consumer often does not need or want. This year, I…

A STARTER GUIDE TO REDUCING HOUSEHOLD WASTE WITH A FEW SMALL CHANGES. One of our lovely Eco Living Team Members has written a little blog piece about her journey to zero waste and the top tips she has learnt along the way… As a family where both parents are working full time, it is an ongoing battle to minimise plastic coming in, to not drown in STUFF and to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Big wins are hard to come by with two under five and barely any time to explore new ideas or choose options which aren’t completely fast and convenient. But, as someone wiser than me once said, it’s more important that everyone makes a few little changes to how they live, than a few superheroes living completely renewable lifestyles. So, with that in mind, I wanted to reflect on my top 5 “little changes” which have made…

A Quick “how to” for Bees Wax Wraps Bees Wax Wraps have become part of my day to day life, as silly as that sounds. I have a nice little collection now that are pretty much constantly in use and I know to how to use them and how to clean them. What I forget is that others are still testing the water with them and therefore have a lot of questions – I’m hoping to answer some of those here. When I’m out doing fairs and markets, the wax wraps usually receive the most attention – a lot is curiosity but others already have some at home and are raving to their friends and family about how good they are. Here are some of the more common questions I’m asked: How do they work? Well, that’s quite straight forward. When you get a new wrap you should scrunch it…

Monthly Challenges Each month over on the Facebook Group we have a monthly challenge. This is, simply put, an area to focus on for the month. I have a lot of people telling me that they find making eco-friendly changes a bit over-whelming, expensive or time consuming. I try to take a lot of that away through the shop and the items I sell, as I spend a long time researching alternative products, trying them (asking others to test them too!), and making sure they are cost effective before I add them to my stock list. But I don’t feel that this is enough. I still think that it can be daunting knowing where to start with each aspect of your household and lifestyle and the idea of these challenges was to help people, no matter where they are on their journey, to tackle one area of change at a…
